"The Indian Exploded in the Basement"

My boy is almost 8. I like to say "he lives in his own colors" . He most certainly does. Son will come up with some of the strangest things to say, at the drop of a hat, and, heaven help me, he makes them believable.

I'm sitting at the kitchen table and I hear an unusually loud bang from the basement under me. Where, son happens to be. The basement is a huge open space, minus the corner the kids put their toys in.

To this moment, I am not sure exactly what the bang was. Son has a habit of throwing his punching bag on 'rough days', I assume this may be the culprit.

Moments after the loud bang, Son appears at the stairs. Panting and looking all around.
hmm.
me: son? what was that big bang down there?
Son: the indian EXPLODED, Mom!
me: the indian?
Son: oh yea ma, he exploded EVERY where!!

More often than not, it is safer not to feed the cells that enhance these tales,(he occassionally puts them into the 'true memory' files) but I just couldn't resist!

me: well, gosh I hope there isn't a mess down there son, M may be upset to find a blown up indian in his basement !
Son: well, I didn't blow him up !
Me: who blew him up?
Son: his FRIENDS did it !! they were gonna blow ME up and they got him.
Me: wow. bad shot huh?
Son: well it was good for me !
Me: I'd say. . . HEY! where are his friends now?
Son: well, I had to blow them up before they blew me up. They blew up the boss.
Me: they blew up thier CHIEF, no less?
Son: no kidding Mom, they blew him up good. but I got the rest of em.
Me: so, who's going to tell M there's a TRIBE of blown up indians in the basement?
Son: not me.
Me: who's going to clean it all up?
Son: um. well, mom, its not all blood n bones, its just kinda burnt black a little on the walls.
Me: oh. well I suppose as long as there's no guts, it's ok.
*giggles*

me: son? how exactly did all of these indians get into the basement? I didn't hear a thing!
son: they were ninja indians Mom.
(he may as well have told me water is wet, he was so straighfaced!)
Me: wow I've never heard of ninja indians.
Son: there's not alot. that was the only 'gang' of em.
Me : OH NO!!! you blew up the ONLY tribe of indian ninjas!! now all the others will come after us !
Son: no, MOM, they won't, because I blew up the only ones.

sounds to me like boy has it covered.

A Temporary Truce ?

I'm not sure if I really want to formally announce this yet. Some of you would be all too happy.

Since moving to Colorado, I have had several Wal-Mart experiences.

Pleasant Wal-Mart experiences.

Keeping in mind we've barely been here a month, I'm going to declare a 'temporary truce' with my pure ,soul-deep, loathing for Wal-Mart.

Seriously, "pleasant" to the point that I mentioned how "painless" the first trip was to Daughter.
Daughter's reply? "Yeah, Mom, WOW! you didn't even get mad once !"

And, they had everything on our list.

The employees, they smiled.

On one of our trips, we were moseying our way to the exit, and from the corner of my eye, I see 3 little boys, about 4 years old. they are all wearing white karate uniforms. (similar to one my son wore in Tn.) I pointed them out to Son, and realized the boys were gathered outside of a dojo.

In Wal-Mart.

A dojo in Wal-Mart.

A WHAT, WHERE ???

No way. Funny, we were looking for one of those !

Still in "wary of Wal-Mart" mode, we walked over and looked at the information table.
Daily classes available for all ages.
different styles of classes
professional instructors.

The dojo itself was small-ish, as would be expected for a Wal-Mart side store.
It appeared to be well-equipped.

One of the instructors came out and introduced himself ( I am proud to say my children did bow) .
He started to give us the run-down of information we'd just read.
So I started firing questions at him.

"what styles?" The form they use is basic defense moves. blocks, kicks, punches.
"How many instructors for each class?" depending on the size of the group, one or two.(which tells me they can only have up to 10-12 in each group of kids)

"would my kids have to 'test in' to keep thier current training ranks? "

Now , he's eyeballing me.
"oh what ranks?"
She's pre-test orange, he's pretest yellow.
"OH ! What did they take?"
Ken-po.
"wow. yes they can keep thier ranks, we work with them on the levels they are on. "

"hmmm. And how aggressive is it? do they work together or just with instructors?"

Baffled.

" Do the kids spar each other?"

"um, no, they don't."

me, "oh, so do you do any contact training?"

"The contact..... well, no , they use the dummies."

At this point I want to giggle, but I hold onto it, becasue this is going to be priceless.

so I look the baffled man right in the face and explain to him, " My kids have had almost 4 years of aggressive Ken-po training. Full contact with instructors and classmates. I think I'd be afraid to enroll them here."

"full.... full contact?" he looks at me like I have 3 heads, then studies the children carefully.

"yes, full contact. My daughter learned how to flip her instructor before we moved. They trained everything from sparring to breaking boards. "

"uuum, no we aren't near that aggressive here."

We scared him. He DID offer the free tryout class, and we thanked him for it.

As we left I had to tell my kids that wasn't the place. Because they'd hurt that man.

Most Wal-Marts have vision centers, movie rentals, a bank.

Ours has an everloving dojo.

When we have more time to 'browse' , I only wonder at what else we may find.

Which is why the truce is a temporary thing.

Amusement with . . . Elevators. yes, Elevators

I think it's safe to start by saying , "not at all the amusement you are thinking". (tsk! tsk! )

We went to Blackhawk with some friends for the weekend. Blackhawk happens to be a small casino town. (huge casinos though!)
Our friend made the arrangements for the room (he's a 'regular') which was in a hotel the size of a small city. 34 floors. 2 floors of casinos, 2 floors of meeting rooms, spa, gym, and pool on the roof.

34 floors means an elevator is a necessity. Especially when your room is on floor 30.

When we arrived saturday evening, the casinos were swamped with people. We got settled into the room, and explored the casino until we got tired of looking for open machines. Naturally , we got seperated, from our friend, who could map the place in his sleep.

The casino floors were designed in large circles. We walked all the way around twice, until we found the elevator hallway.

the elevator opens, Husband hits the buttom for the highest number. the doors close, up we go, but realize the highest number was TEN. um. we're on 30.
so we get off the elevator on 10. cross the hall to get onto a different elevator ( i think we were hoping it would go higher?) and ended up going back to where we started in the casino.

walked the "track" another 2 times, and didn't see another elevator hall. we saw the enty hall for the spa and desk, but no elevators.

silly, road weary, tired us, walked the track another 2 or 3 times before returning to the elevators that only go to 10. standing there, one of the hotel staff comes to wait as well. I poke husband, who being a MAN, will not cave to ask even where the elevators are.
So, as a woman, i take it upon myself to end this silliness. " excuse me sir, do you happen to know of an elevator that goes higher than 10?"

"well, yes, the hotel elevator. its through the spa. "

ugh. thank you!

finally we get to the right one, and up we went, declaring no more expolring til morning , when we would have an escort and some more rest in us !

Sunday afternoon we decide we'd like to go see the roof-pool. floor 34. In the elevator, the pool floor has its own big button. we rode that elevator up and down 32 floors at least 3 times, because folks kept getting on to go to thier floors. Husband kept hitting 'pool'. never got there. it seemed to be the only on that didn't light up.

so we stop at 30 again. try a different elevator (2 of 5 now) .same thing. another 2 rides.

Yes, haha, but allow me to remind you that on top of the high altitude, riding up and down repeatedly in a 34 floor elevator will make your ears bleed if you do it too long. Passing floors 12, 17, 24 and 27, my ears would pop so loudly I'd thought I'd gone deaf.

and we still hadn't gone past 30.

Again in elevator number two, I can't take it anymore. my ears hurt and my poor stomache is still adjusting. So I ask- how do we get to the pool ?

The man points to the sign, and the card reader under the floor buttons.

POOL,SPA FLOORS : SLIDE YOUR ROOM KEY AND PRESS THE FLOOR BUTTON

Yep. Wow did we feel goofy. In our defense, this sign and reader were at ankle height.

We made it to the pool, but were still somewhat motion-sick for swimming.
