Son is a picky eater. he has his favorites few, and will try to refuse anything else. At home, what is made for dinner, is dinner. If it isn't eaten, or at least tasted, the punishment for not eating it being no dessert.
Son likes dessert.
So he eats most of his meals, though he does complain a bit..
While we were at his grandparents', of course, this was changed on me.
Nana knows he's particular, and asked me before we got there. " I know there are some things they can't have, and Son is picky, so what DO they eat? I'm going to go to the store before you arrive so we don't have to later."
yeah. . . I fell for it, hook , line, and sinker.
She can't have too much citrus, he will eat spagetti and pizza every day if we let him.
her reply ," oh, I'm not eating pizza every day for two weeks. We'll surely have something else he likes."
And again, I fell for it.
the first night , She had chicken. . .
Son? Eats
the second day , we went shopping. and the kids got hungry as we finished. Pappy spotted a pizza place. we ordered one slice each, which turned out to be about 1/4 of a pizza each. these 'slices' were huge. We ended up cutting the kids' slices into 3's. they each ate two- which meant they had a slice to take back to the house.
Somehow, at dinner that evening, those extra slices made it to the table.
son? eats.
My sister made spagetti the following night.
Son... eats.
Miraculously, she had made enough spagetti to put a bowl on the table for the next 2 nights as well.
guess what my Son ate?
We took the kids to a chinese buffet, where, out of 5 full buffet tables, my children both took the pizza. Son also tried the chicken, which he vetoed after a single nibble.
We take them to a greek place, he wants chicken nuggets. (pasta wasn't on the kids menu, but chicken is a universal fallback for kid-friendly)
It seemed to be a conspiracy.
Every night we'd sit for dinner, and there was always some form of spagetti or pizza on the table. coincidentally, also placed in front of Son.
Every night, I put some of the spagetti, or pizza onto his plate, ALONG with whatever else was served. Not heaping amounts either. a teaspoon of peas, a few bites of pork chops... and told him the same rules apply. eat the dinner or no dessert. If he cleared all the spagetti, and at least tried the rest, it was approved. if he didn't touch the rest, it was no snack.
My Mother tried to get him out of this.
"No wonder he doesn't eat it all, you give him so much"
oh hardly Mother. Knowing she is partly picking n me, and partly appealing for her grandson's right to eat whatever he wants at Nana's, the following night i give him just a bit less of the rest of the meal. .. with his spagetti.
She sees its not working, and attempts another method.
" wait until you see what we have for dessert!"
oh no..
She's got the big guns now. Of course, Son ate with no more problem than he had before.
Why would he possibly have a problem anyway? he's getting his favorites every night. He has yet to have complained.
But, being Nana....
You know those snacks were big time.
When we get home, this child needs to be retrained. we do pizza or spagetti once a week.
The boy is asking for leftovers instead.
He isn't getting them, but I found it amusing how easily he slid right into the habit of getting what he wants for dinner.
and of course, the nightly complaints have restarted.
how have i solved this issue?
Also every night, there was spinach on the table. I, myself, refuse to eat the stuff, so can't possibly force it into my kids.
The joke was trying to get one of us to eat spinach.
the joke failed miserably. none of us even got close to doing it.
Peer pressure will get you nowhere in the nuthouse.
my solution to Son's complaints about home dinners not being up to Nana's dinners, was to buy a can of spinach.
I place it on the table, and tell him if he doesn't want to eat dinner, he has to have something nutritious, and i can easily open that can.
HAha!
son... Eats.

CheetahFish :Tales from the south
Playing in the pool, my 8 yr old daughter decided she was a fish. “ what kind of fish are you?” I asked her.
“I’m a Cheetahfish”
A what? There’s no cheetah fish !
Her reply was full of reason, and ever hard to argue.
“ I am a cheetah fish. I am related to the catfish. I am from…. Antadonesia, (complete with spelling) that’s in… um.. Africa or Australia I think. I am the fastest fish in the water, and have great big teeth to eat whatever I want. “
Ok honey. You got it… like I said, she had a name, an animal category, a homeland location, and her survival skills all lined up and ready. How to argue with such a sufficient species ??
When we went out for dinner, we took the kids to a Chinese buffet. This buffet had foods I have never seen in any buffet style Chinese restaurant. We all found it great fun when my Father, known to my kids as “pappy” returned to the table with a bowl of Wasabi.
For those of you who don’t know, wasabi is a flaming spicy hot sauce. It is also a very unappealing shade of green.
My children’s experience with wasabi is humorous- they heard it on a tv reality show- the contestants had to survive a Japanese game show- which included the contestants being forced to eat 2 huge sushi rolls, stuffed with wasabi. If they couldn’t eat it in a specific time- they had to start over. These poor folks were 4 shades of flaming purple. The kids’ amusement came from the Japanese game show crowd. “EAT THE WAAAASAAAABIIII” my kids found dozens of ways to have fun with the word “wasabi”.
So, when Pappy comes to the table with said wasabi, my kids are overly curious. ( and also giving the grandparents every version of their love for the spoken word itself) I ask them to try it. Noooo way. They both were able to smell the wasabi- but weren’t brave enough to try it. ( my father loves hot n spicy- my daughter does as well, and can generally keep up with Pappy, but when she saw Pappy’s head turning red, she refused quickly.)
That evening it was announced by daughter, back in the pool expanding the Cheetah fish’s biology facts, that the Cheetahfish eats wasabi meatballs. When asked HOW the cheetah fish would find these wasabi meatballs in the water, she said, they grow in the grasses. When you pull up the sea grass by the roots, the wasabi meatballs are waaay at the bottom. Ok.
So then how exactly would a cheetah fish go about pulling these sea grass roots?
With its claws of course. It has longer fins with claws, just so it can dig up its favorite snack.
Really now, I had to appreciate the fact she was able to pull these replies out of her head at the speed of light, or perhaps it would be better to call it “faster than the speed of imagination” ?

Its a WHAT?! :tales from the south
On vacation, My parents took us shopping, to buy the grandchildren some toys. ( its what grandparents DO, right?)
We went to a Target store. As we entered, they had a greeter at the door, giving shoppers carts, and handing out red papers.
I was handed one as well. It had the Target logo on it, and was folded in half. Assuming it is a booklet of coupons or specials in the store, I open it, and see… oh, really?! … it’s a MAP of the store !
This had me laughing so hard I almost had to go back outside. Each area on the Map was shown as a red cube, with the department name on it. Toys, boys clothes, girls clothes, accessories, electronics… How many people do you know actually get LOST in a Target store ??
My Mother’s reasoning for this? “ well, they may have just redesigned the store, moved things around.”
Um….. No.
The store was the same as it was last year when we came to visit.
I wonder what the door greeters at Sam’s club are handing out ? THAT store is at least twice the size of Target. Maybe they have mini- GPS systems, and trackers on the shopping carts.

Fridge bug turned bedbug! :Tales from the South
When the children and I visited my parents in Florida, we were given the basement area. Beds, sink, fridge, tv. Kids had plenty of room to play as well.
Of course, having made the trip by car, we had cooler items and drinks to put into the fridge. When we opened the fridge, there was a big brown thing on the top shelf. My daughter came out of her skin. I flinched, but almost expected ‘ something’. My father is notorious for hiding odd scare-ables in refrigerators. This particular scare-able, was a huge plastic cockroach.
This could not go for long without some kind of retaliation. Having a 6 year old boy, we had a bucket o’ bugs at our pleasure.
Turned out we didn’t need his bugs though. My sister went to work one evening ,and it was just too easy. I took the plastic cockroach into her room, and placed it so it was barely peeking out from under her pillow. Barely enough to rub her head, maybe tickle at her hair, just enough to freak her out.
When she got into bed, we knew it. Even downstairs, with the AC running loudly, I was able to hear her blood curdling shriek, and the stomping above my head as she ran across the house to escape.( Oh, What I would have done to be a fly on the wall !!)
Roughly an hour later, my Mother came downstairs to tell me how “cute” I am. To tell me that yes, I managed to scare the daylights out of my sister, but ALSO my grandmother, mother, and father, who were sleeping within much closer hearing range of Sister’s reactions. This was not appreciated much by the elders at 11:30 pm.
Mom was also sent on a mission to return the cockroach to a spot to scare me back. This mission did not succeed. She was instructed to put the cockroach into my coffee cup, for an early morning shocker. When she was feeling sneaky enough to pull it off, she realized I would have made the coffee without looking in the mug, therefore dissolving the cockroach.
I will say it was an excellent effort.

Departures : Tales from the South
Yes, the title is Departures. Plural, as in, more than one.
Because I make the trip to Florida each year by car, and because I travel with two children (Husband stays home ) my truck gets a tune up.
This year it was all good. I had told my mechanic, who also happens to be a long time family friend, that the truck had a 'hiccup' when it was at about 50 mph. (good thing he's a long time pal, i think he's the only one who would know how to translate MY noises and ills of the truck) He said it could be the fuel pump, we arranged a day for him to check it out.
After this tune up, the truck was behaving. no more hiccups either. Husband said it was probably the oil, which was changed, with the tune up. So we somewhat disregarded the return trip to the mechanic pal.
I woke the children at around 4 am, stuffed some food in them, made SURE they both used the bathroom, said bye to Dad, and off we went.
When I got onto the interstate, getting up to speed, the truck hiccupped.
not just once. several times.
I stopped at the next exit and called husband, who told me if i wasn't comfortable to come back.
I go back out to the interstate, hoping its just some muck geting pushed around and a one- time thing following a good tune up.
Not so lucky. It contiued its horrible hiccups, and again, I exited at the next ramp. I had gone maybe 3 miles on the interstate, and hadn't even left my towns exits.
We return home, and along the way I have to explain to my excited ,tired, children that we aren't leaving yet. Daughter gets it. we'll get the truck fixed, and maybe have to leave tomorrow, but we ARE going .
Son, in his early morning tired, but thrilled about being on the road to the place he raves about all year, freaks out. " we're NEVER going to go!! Mom, we were GOOD! you SAID we'd GO! now we're never going to go, and i'm very mad."
well said son, BUT we ARE going to go, you Are being good, but the truck is wrong, and it needs to be fixed. do you want us to get stuck again? (we'd had a trip with a dead transmission , and another with a flat tire.this trip was due to be uneventful)
At home, Husband calls mechanic pal, takes the truck.
It turned out to be electrical, and was fixed by dinnertime. We would leave in the morning... again.
The second departure was MUCH smoother,no hiccups, no hitches, nice and smooth. My non-car-sleeper- childern actually went back to sleep for about an hour ( we HAD left an hour earlier than the previous day)
we also ,surprisingly, had great weather. I always get hit with big ugly storms that are downright scary. i've watched more than one cloud start rotations from the winshield of my truck, and have had to pull over due to hail or very strong downpours. A few scattered drops here and there was all we saw.
Traffic was amazingly moving too. A few slow - downs for minor construction, but no deadlocks.
the kids were behaved, no bickering or whining. they amused themselves and each other, and we played some silly word games.
almost too smooth.
made me wonder what the trip home would have for me.

Tales from the south
The children and i have made our annual road trip to florida, to visit the grandparents. This year's trip was a 'do or die' , as my grandmother was also visiting. I haven't seen my grandmother in many years, as her health didn't allow her to travel much, and i lacked the funds to go all the way to NY by car with two kids. The two kids are also her first Great-grandchildren, and they have never met each other. This trip was going to happen if we had to walk... and it almost came to that.
Our drive was 10 hours, which wasn;t horrible with the kids, who are well travelled. Of course, there are tales to come of it.
My kids refer to their grandparents as Nana and Pappy, solely because when my daughter was born my mother announced she would NOT be a 'mawmaw' or a 'mammy' ... she wanted to be "grandma."
for anyone who knows my parents, "grandma" is just too plain for my mother. She earned Nana, and though she wasn't thrilled with it at first, she has learned its a special title.
As history has shown, the children reflect the parents. I have been told repeatedly I am insane. ok, but those who have met my folks, truly have understanding of WHY i am this way. My parent's home was the original Asylum. In speaking I refer to my home as the asylum, because it goes nicely with our last name- BUT, my folks hold the honor of having the higher Asylum ranking over the Nuthouse.
I am explaining this, because there are several blog entries to come regarding our trip this year, and all of them have a touch of madness to them. I am sure you will get at least a few giggles from our raving hysterical insanity tales.
Please note- we were there for two weeks. there are ALOT of crazies to be posted. some are already typed out and ready to be copied and pasted here, ( ok, so i admit to a cheat now and then) and some will flow out as I go. These will be titled Tales from the south- along with a mini title. some of these tales occured before we even left, but are related to the trip itself, so, you'll get all that fun too.
This post in itself is an introduction to the "tales from the south. " a few details you may need before we begin our trip together through the Asylum.
The "cast" is simple- mostly of my immediate family, though there were some of my parent's or sister's pals that made appearances, and will be noted as we go.
the folks : my mom, and dad- fun ,crazy, life loving folk. they do thier thing and if you don't like it, you can leave. ( see where i get it yet? possibly not, but you'll have a better idea soon) my mother believes strongly in dance like no one's watching, and she does. My father is notorious for his stories. again, this is an obvious trait i inherited, and without his crazy narrations in my youth, you probably wouldn't be getting this blog today.
my sister : several years younger than i, lives with the folks, in a mutual arrangement that seems to work. my sister and i spent most of our childhood trying to kill each other, and as adults now, instead of physical attacks, we test each other's patience and sanity levels. ... severely. i'm not sure about her, but its actually fun for me :)
the dog: my sister's "baby". he;s a bichon mix, a tiny yappy dog that seems to think my sister need ferocious protection. ok, in my case, he's onto something. you can't get too close to sis when the dog is nearby, forget going into her bedroom... but when she was gone to work, this dog was my buddy. we also had a few events that made us think the dog was confused between myself and sis, as if he was seeing double, and couldn''t tell who was who.
"the Mother" is my grandmother. she is called such because she raised more than enough kids to be THE mother. she is no nonsense, yet quiet and observing of everything, even when it seems she is not even there. when she has something to say, be ready. She spent many week long babysitting stints with us, during which we tested HER patience and sanity to no end, and, Bless her, she somehow came through in one piece.
so, with all of these wonderful personalities , plus my own little clan of residents from the nuthouse, my folks' Asylum certainly stayed true to its name, and we, kept our end up by enhancing our own nuthouse qualities. after all, we were on VACATION. left alot of open ended behaviors to induce upon the unwary.
enjoy!! we sure did!!

"Mama!! my mouth is bleeding! "
First, let me surprise you all by saying this line was very oddly enough, NOT proclaimed in terror, as it usually is. This was announced happily!
My daughter becomes a shivery mess when she sees blood. must clean it, must have a bandage, must not see it herself. I am much the same way when it comes to any amount that qualifies as more than a scrape.
So occasionally , when my daughter brushes her teeth and spits blood with her rinse, she'll come running, convinced her tounge is falling off or something. She brushes hard, and does her gums very well for a child of her age. so yes, from time to time they bleed a little. Her dentist has told her its nothing to freak out about, yet, being blood, she can't help it.
The other night, I sent her to brush, and she cam running down the hall, very excited and ... happy. "Mama!!! Mama!! I was spitting blood !!! "
I had to ask why ,suddenly she sees this as a positive.
"because it means my teeth will finally fall out!! getting SO close now!"
I couldn't help but laugh a little. This is the last child on earth i ever expected to be excited about spitting blood, for ANY reason.
Its also somewhat understandable. Daughter has waited ever so patiently to loose her baby teeth, while her friends are all filling in thier numerous gaps.
Last year, she had to have her first loose tooth pulled out by the dentist, the thing was rooted so strongly that the adult tooth came out behind it. The one next to it came out on easter , a week later, when she bit into a boiled egg, (the dentist had loosened it up) she had thought it was an egg shell in her mouth.
Almost a year later, she has finally gotten those two front teeth loose. but they will not budge. she has tried everything to get one out, eating the hardest foods she can find.( Mother, on the other hand is torturing the child with palate checks- to make sure we don't have any more coming in where they shouldn't)
The excitment she shows about the spot of blood, because her teeth are loose , is due to the fact that she hasn't lost any without some kind of dental help at this point. She looks forward to the day she can gross me out by simply handing me her tooth, rather than the dentist taking it out, or mistaking it for food.
The day following her excited announcement, she fell in the yard and scraped her leg. This was the end of the world. I somewhat used the thrill of the previous night to calm her by telling the poor hysterical girl that she had more blood from her teeth the night before than from this scrape that had just the tiniest dot of blood. ( It had clotted before she got to the house)
go figure.

While I'm at it, I'll share another odd dental story with you.
My kids are exactly 2 years and 6 months apart. Our insurance requires the children get thier checkups every 6 months. This works out great for me, because, evry time one of them has a birthday, we make the doctor rounds. physicals, eyes ,and teeth.
The last dental checkup was a surprise.
My son, who is 6 years old, had two of his 6yr molars in. the dentist capped them, because these are the ones most kids have problems brushing, waaay in the back. He tells me by the next visit the other two molars should be ready to cap as well, they were just beginning to break the gumline.
okie dokie.
Moving onto my daughter, who was 8 1/2 at the time- she hadn't gotten her 6yr molars YET. The dentist thought it a bit odd, but said he could see they were going to start soon.
She'll be 9 next month.
She's been complaining of some pain in the back of her mouth, so I think these molars may be attempting an appearance, just in time for another visit.
This is odd to us- along with the loosing of her baby teeth, becasue she got her baby teeth early. I mean surprisingly early. At 4 months old, she started popping teeth out 3 and 4 at a time, all over the place. Let me tell you, the kid was a true drool bucket. Bibs did no good for this one, we used dish towels. Those stupid chewing cookies, also no relief, she got T-bones to gnaw on.
The dentist we took her to at the time, and ourselves, all assumed this was a good thing- it meant she'd loose her baby teeth early, and most likely in pairs of 3 or 4... Everyone we talked to with kids had said the same if thier babies had teethed early. " oh yes! lil so-n-so had all his teeth in by a year and a half, and by 6 he was loosing pairs of baby teeth while his molars were still coming in"
Like I said above though, this is not the case. Those babies are hanging on tight, and for some strange reason her 6 yr molars are taking thier sweet time breaking the surface. Leaves us wondering if our daughter will be the only child in the high school still waiting for her two front teeth to fall out !
( It had clotted before she got to the house)
go figure.
